The oud (Arabic:) is a short-neck lute-type, pear-shaped stringed instrument (a chordophone in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification of instruments), usually with 11 strings grouped in 6 courses, but some models have 5 or 7 courses, with 10 or 13 strings respectively. 96 cm long can be used for playing music and decoration. The oud is very similar to modern lutes, and also to Western lutes. The modern oud is most likely derived from the Assyrian Lute.
Similar instruments have been used in the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia for thousands of years, including Mesopotamia, Egypt, North Africa, the Caucasus, the Levant, and Balkanic countries like Greece, Albania, and Bulgaria; there may even be prehistoric antecedents of the lute. The oud, as a fundamental difference with the western lute, has no frets and a smaller neck.
It is the direct successor of the Persian Barbat lute. The oldest surviving oud is thought to be in Brussels, at the Museum of Musical Instruments.
The Oud consists of the following sections. The sound box is also called the bowl or the back of the lute. The chest or face with openings called lunar holes to help increase the resonance and strength of the sound. The clicker is used to tie the strings near the badminton racket.The neck, or ulna, is the place where the player presses the strings. The nose or the bone is placed at the head of the stem of the lute on the side of the keys to support the strings on it and lift it from the ulna. The keys or the torus, which are 12 or 14, are used to tighten the strings of the lute.
The strings, which are five double strings, a sixth tendon can be tied to the lute, and more recently a seventh tendon can be tied.
