Excellent very old and astonishing sounding English violin made c1835 by Charles Harris in Oxford. Harris violin are quite rare, he did not made so much instruments. Charles Harris was born the son of a violin maker, with whom he trained. Following a fortuitous inheritance, he ascended to the aristocracy at the age of 37 and left violin making behind for more glamorous pursuits until he squandered his fortune in the mid 1830s.

It was around this time that Harris seems to have taken up his craft again, and came into contact with. After the death of his father in 1835, Henry Lockey. Hill was evidently in need of additional guidance and traveled to Oxford to study with Harris. Thus, despite his checkered association to the craft, Harris indirectly influenced late 19th and 20th century British violin making, and his signed instruments that date from this period show fine workmanship that can be reminiscent of Gagliano.

In a very good state of preservation for its age, crack near soundpost, professionally repaired and patched long time ago, besides it mostly signs of daily intensive professional use. As rare and very good sounding instruments they are quite sought after, last time I remember saw Harris violin on sale was 2 years ago, it went for more than 20k usd. This violin has an excellent and fine tone, very much reminding old Italian Cremona sound, with great resonance. It has superb projection & a fast response time. It features a very well-balanced sound between the high & low registers.

It is very easy to hold and play, made for player! Good original Dominique Poirson bow (labeled Justin Poirson, circa 1910) included in price if your offer will meet my expectations (can be negotiated, do not hesitate to contact me). This instrument would be suitable for professional players as well as for young emerging soloists. Fully ready to play, no further investments by luthier needed.

We recently tested it in a big Symphony Hall and of course it was able to fill that room easily. For more fine violins or bows from collection - please ask for a info.
