An accomplished composer of gospel and secular works, Thompson wrote the well-known piece, "Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling", among many others which are familiar to church choirs and congregations to this day. By the 1880s, Thompson was also enjoying success as a retail merchant.

His Thompson & Company music store was one of the largest companies of its kind in the country. This catalogue offered today, features violins, violin cases, violin bows and strings, as well as accessories and attachments. "American" and "Thompson" guitars, string basses, banjos and various accessories appear, as do autoharps, music stands, and mandolins. The soft cover catalogue is complete.
