Alfred Moritz Violin Copy Of Nicholas Amati Am Excelsior Made In Germany

Violin Copy of Nicholas Amati by Alfred Moritz, Dresden, Germany. Collectable violin, stylish and full of character. Fragile items are double-boxed and bubble-wrapped for protection. The full length of the violin is approx.

Two-piece-back and ribs/sides made from maple and exhibiting beautifully rich orange/red flaming. Two-piece-front made from fine grained spruce.

The stylish scroll and neck is also made of maple. Tail piece in boxwood, the chin rest is Bakelite and the fingerboard has been crafted from ebony. The sound-post is in place and intact. The scroll is very expressive and delicately carved. The peg box in good order. Inlaid purfling is beautiful and very precise. All In good condition with only a small 7cm split to the joined central seam panels at the bottom bout and is half a millimetre in width.

The split runs just short of the top tail piece and trails off just before the fine tuners. Regrettably this is a normal occurrence with violins this age, due to changes in heat, humidity and tension.

Signs of wear commensurate with age, scuffs/scratches/dinks throughout. By origin, when first created, the maple central seam two-piece interior back panels were reinforced with evenly spaced wooden cleats from top to bottom.

These are visible through the violin's f-holes. Restoration is not advisable to the split as this does not effect resonance, performance or pitch.

The tone produced is dominant, warm and radiant. It is well-balanced and responsive to play. The sound produced is remarkably resonant and rich in overtones. Also included with the violin Violin case (wet-molded leather, shaped over pattern mold) made Hawkes & Son, London The "MOLDA" Case No.

Body is 13 As a side note The elite of the German and Bohemian violin makers, who may have been born and trained in Saxony, usually worked in large cities such as Berlin, Dresden, Munich, and Prague and tended to make fine and expensive instruments for wealthy, important clients. Those produced around 1900 in Dresden were typically labelled "Manufactured in Dresden" and often copies of the great Italian masters. Many of the old instruments from the late-19th and early 20th centuries haven't survived or are beyond repair as a result of decades of neglect.

Yet some still exist and after restoration, become unique. One advantage the region had was a plentiful supply of good-quality wood, and the wood in these instruments has been ageing for the past century meaning surviving instruments can be very good. For history buffs and instrument collectors alike, it is paramount to note that the Latin forms of the first names, Andreas, Antonius, Hieronymus, and Nicholaus, were generally used in the Amati violin labels, and the family name was sometimes latinized as Amatus. Soon after, for export purposes, violin craftsmen of many countries adopted adding the maker's location to their authentication/maker's ticket stating the origin of manufacture of the instrument.
