Kora, a west african instrument-74/17.5 cm. While many instruments got a makeover over the years transitioning from natural to more sophisticated materials in their make, Kora is still made from the naturally available products and boasts the life-style and indigenous skills possessed by the tribesmen of West Africa. Kora belong to the family of harp lute and typical of any lute it is long-necked with a body made of a long hardwood neck and fixed to calabash gourd resonator covered by a leather soundboard.

Twenty-one leather or nylon strings are attached to the top of the neck with leather tuning rings. The strings pass over a notched bridge and are anchored to the bottom of the neck with a metal ring. Possessing a range of just over three octaves, the kora is tuned by moving the leather rings located on the top of the neck. Though this instrument is played in West African countries like Gambia, its origin is still unknown. As is the case with most musical instruments Kora is traditionally associated with royalty, royal courthouses, or religious practices.

The kora is used by male musicians mainly to accompany folklore narrations, recitations, and songs in honour of a patron. An original patina covers the item. The strings pass over a notched bridge (10strings on one side of the bridge, 11 on the other) and are anchored to the bottom of the neck with a metal ring.
