This 1978 Shergold Masquerader Custom 12-String Electric Guitar is a piece of vintage guitar history and is an absolute stunner! These were produced between 1976 and 1981, and in smaller numbers (to customer order) from 1982 until the official relaunch in 1991. These guitars are very solid and have the characteristically superb neck that all the Shergolds share. The versatile electronics make these ideal all-purpose guitars, but they are especially popular with rhythm players as the output from the pickups isn't over-powering. The six string Masquerader was the only Shergold guitar model in continuous production through the'independent' Shergold period between 1975 to 1991 - the twelve string models only became available from 1976.This is one of the Custom models which were made between 1976 1981. The distinguishing features include the pickups fitted on individual mounting rings and a small separate scratchplate. Serial Number 8177, made in 1978. A beautiful and great sounding vintage 12-string from Shergold, a brand that was founded by Jack Golder and Norman Houlder, two british luthiers who crafted guitars for Burns and later Hayman. These were made in the UK and were a spin off from Burns.
They were pretty widely used by British bands in the 80's and 90's and even "famous" for a 12 string version being used by The Church in Australia. This one has been well played and feels great.
The necks on these are quite thin and remind me of Mosrite necks (not AS thin) but with bigger frets. They're very comfortable to play. Like most great guitars they have a zero fret which we love!
The headstock is a super-interesting shape and the perspex badge is a little touch of class which looks great too. The truss rod is adjusted through a slot in the body under the chrome serial number plate like some Burns guitars used. It's an ingenious way of adjusting the rod as you don't have to mess with the strings or neck in any way to adjust it. This guitar is in good vintage used condition. As is very common for guitars of this age (particularly Shergold guitars), the lacquer all over the body has surface cracking. However, none of this cracking is structural.
Also there is a small amount of discolouration to the metal on the back of the Schaller machineheads. Apart from that, it is in fantastic condition for its age.
